Gaga dance-maven's series follows unknowns

ATLANTA, April 17 (UPI) -- Choreographer Laurieann Gibson says her new BET series "Born to Dance" looks outside the U.S. media meccas for new talent.

"Born to Dance" features Gibson working with aspiring young dancers in Philadelphia and Detroit who don't have access to top-tier instruction but are also shielded from the cut-throat environments of New York and Los Angeles.

Production will be based in Atlanta and the show debuts Aug. 2, Billboard said Sunday.

Gibson, who is best known for her work with pop star Lady Gaga, told Billboard the series will include the brass-tacks of making a living while also devoting their passion to their art.

"It's a survival story of youth and how much they need real art," Gibson said. "We are very conscious about not saying, 'You're fired.' There's so much rejection in the dance world. My show isn't about winning a trophy and then being let go."
